Crimean peninsula is a small mountainous country on the South of Ukraine. Population is about 2 millions. In 1783 the Crimea became the part of Russia (Catherine the Great) and in 1954 it became the part of Ukraine (Nikita Khrushchev). Crimea is linked to the mainland Ukraine by the Perekop Isthmus in the North and Arabatskaya Strelka. International airport is in Simferopol. Crimean mountains are rather forested and not high (Highest peak is 1545 m. above sea level). Most of the beaches on Azov sea coast, near Yevpatoria and somewhere to the North on the Black sea coast are sandy. The Southern Coast of Crimea (The Black sea coast) is mostly pebbled.
Crimea is autonomous Republic. Capital of Crimea is Simferopol. Biggest city is Sevastopol. Sevastopol is also a Navy base. Biggest cargo port is Feodosia. For foreigners the most popular city to stay is Yalta.
